Rex Ryan, already headed to HBO, is writing a book, too. The brash, charismatic New York Jets coach is penning a book that will combine autobiography and football strategy. Doubleday acquired the untitled book's North American rights and plans to publish it in spring 2011 -- potentially not long after the Super Bowl win Ryan is gunning for.

Cunningham’s son dies in hot tub mishap (AP)

The 2-year-old son of former NFL star quarterback Randall Cunningham has died in what authorities on Wednesday called an apparent backyard hot tub accident. The Clark County coroner's office identified the child as Christian Cunningham, and said the cause of death was pending. Seahawks sign former Chargers S Ellison (AP)

The Seattle Seahawks have signed safety Kevin Ellison to a new contract a week after claiming him off waivers. The team says Tuesday it had to claim the former San Diego Chargers player last week, then waive him and allow him to clear waivers before Seattle could rework a new deal. Ellison was an All-Pac-10 selection and team captain at USC for new Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.

Steelers OT Colon likely to miss season (AP)

Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon will have surgery Wednesday to repair a torn right Achilles' tendon and is expected to miss the season. Colon was injured while working out on his own at the Steelers practice complex on Monday. The Steelers haven't officially ruled Colon out for the season, but such an injury typically sidelines a player for at least nine months.

Bengals RB Benson arrested for assault (AP)

Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson was arrested Tuesday and charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly punching a bar employee in the face nearly a month ago. Benson was booked into the Travis County jail where he later posted $5,000 bail and was released. The charge of assault with injury carries a maximum potential penalty of up to $4,000 in fines and up to a year in jail.

Giants’ Jones moved for more procedures (AP)

New York Giants rookie safety Chad Jones will be moved to a New York hospital on Tuesday after he was seriously injured in a car accident early Friday in New Orleans. Jones, a two-sport star at LSU who was drafted by the Giants in the third round this year, is being transferred to Presbyterian Hospital for plastic surgery and additional orthopedic procedures.

Rookies getting hang of life in NFL (AP)

There's no hitting at the league's annual four-day rookie symposium at La Costa, not even time for hitting golf balls on La Costa's famous golf courses.

Giants waive recently acquired KR Davis (AP)

Kick returner Chris Davis didn't last very long with the New York Giants. The Giants announced on Monday that they waived Davis after he failed his physical. The Giants had claimed Davis on waivers last week in a move to get a veteran returner after Domenik Hixon suffered a major knee injury during a mandatory minicamp earlier in the month.

Steelers RT Colon injures Achilles’ (AP)

Steelers right tackle Willie Colon has injured his right Achilles' tendon while working out at the team's practice complex. If the tendon is torn, Colon is likely to require surgery that would end his season. Director of football operations Kevin Colbert said Colon was being evaluated by the team's medical staff.

NFL lends voices to Nickelodeon cartoons (AP)

The NFL is getting animated. The league's players and coaches will lend their voices to a series of short cartoons for Nickelodeon's Nicktoons channel. The 22 episodes, which will each run 2 to 5 minutes, will air weekly during the NFL season from September to February. "Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core" is based on the league's website for kids.
